Canberra Theatre Redevelopment
The Canberra Theatre Centre Redevelopment is a landmark project set to transform Australia’s capital into a world-class performing arts destination. Designed by the powerhouse consortium of Architectus, Henning Larsen, and Arup, this ambitious redevelopment will deliver a new 2,000-seat lyric theatre, upgrades to The Playhouse and Canberra Theatre, and an expanded Courtyard Studio — all within the heart of Canberra’s Civic and Cultural District. While the project is most commonly called the Canberra Theatre Centre Redevelopment, it’s widely recognised as the cultural centrepiece of the ACT Government’s vision to revitalise the city’s arts precinct.
What sets this project apart is its deep commitment to sustainability and cultural integration. The redevelopment is targeting Green Star all-electric status, pushing Canberra’s green leadership, and embedding First Nations stories and design through collaboration with consultants like Yerrabingin. For us as building certifiers, the challenge and privilege lie in balancing bold architectural ambition, cutting-edge acoustic and theatre design, and the technical complexity of creating a venue ready to host global-scale productions — all while ensuring safety, compliance, and resilience at every step.
