The Calyx

The Calyx at the Royal Botanic Garden Sydney, is a world-class horticultural display and event venue that represents a striking fusion of architecture, botany, and public space. Opened in June 2016, The Calyx occupies an area of approximately 1,500 square metres and is a landmark feature within the iconic Royal Botanic Garden. Notably, it houses the largest vertical floral display in the Southern Hemisphere, setting it apart from other garden-based structures globally.

The design concept, inspired by the botanical form of a calyx (the whorl of sepals protecting a flower bud), created a seamless relationship between the natural world and architectural form. Its distinctive geometry and the integration of an indoor garden within a dramatically curved structure offer a unique experience that merges immersive education, art, and nature.

Group DLA were engaged to provide Building Code of Australia (BCA) throughout the design and planning approval phases of the project, including the establishment of the Fire Engineering, including associated liaison with Fire Rescue NSW (FRNSW) & Local Authorities.
